11 Ways to Deal with a Difficult Boss I love my job, I enjoy working with my colleagues, and I love everything about my work but theres one thing thats giving me a terrible headache almost everyday dealing with my difficult boss. I believe I am not the only person who experiences this   most working professionals have encountered the same and you will surely come across a boss like Miranda Priestly (from The Devil Wears Prada) once or twice in your entire life. Thats already too much to bare! But no matter how hard it is to handle a boss who has an unpleasant manner and is uneasy to approach, you must not give up or think of leaping out quickly and hoping to find a nicer one. Instead, I urge you to stay in your workplace, develop your managing-up skills, and try to face the problem with all your might. How should you be able to tolerate your bosss bad behaviour, I hear you ask? The solution is here: 1) Practice professionalism in your workplace: Everything that happened in the four corners of the office should be taken professionally and not personally. If your boss say something that hurts or upsets you, dont fight back. You have to respect your boss no-matter-what. Dont let it affect your work and productivity. But if the matter becomes too serious, dont hesitate to ask help from  people who are in the right position to do something about it. Even though bad things kept happening between the two of you, do not ever forget to still honor your superior! 2) Focus on your priorities but keep in mind your boss professional goals: What are your priorities? Is it to succeed in your work or to have an inner conflict with your boss? If your focus is to become successful in your career then you must work diligently and keep on producing best results. Some bosses became bad to their employees when the work is not done properly. So as an employee, you have to do your job and must do it well because your boss priorities is also your priority. Dont give your boss any reason to hate you but instead give him all the reasons why hiring you was a good decision! 3) Treat the situation as an incredible learning experience: You might be suffering a lot now because of your relationship with your boss but youll definitely learn something from it. Meeting a difficult boss is not bad after all because youre gaining knowledge and experience that you can use in your future endeavors. When you have successfully learned how to deal with such people, encountering more of them in the future wont give you a headache anymore. 4) If you have any concerns, communicate it with your boss: Communication is the key to avoid all kinds of misunderstanding and it is needed in the workplace to have a better career. Do not hesitate to approach your boss if there are things that are unclear to you. Be honest and always be polite to him. Keep your boss updated and always provide accurate information in your regular progress report. Aside from being open to your ideas and thoughts, rememeber to become an active listener too. Learn to listen and understand every word that your boss says. 5) Martyrdom is not a way to career advancement: Dont always take the blame if you know it is not your fault. Do not get too much work if you think you cannot handle it all. Being a martyr is a choice and if you want to play that role in your work then youre only being harsh to yourself. It will not help you in advancing your career. 6) Stay fascinated and not frustrated: In this bad situation, some people just slack off or lose interest in performing well because they hate working with their difficult manager or supervisor. Dont be like them, instead show your boss how better you are by performing well in your assigned job. Be fascinated with your work. Stay upbeat and get engaged with your boss professionally. Keeping a good and positive attitude will not only make you feel better but it also drives you to be the best that you can be. 7) Be careful with every word you say and every action you do: Talking less and listening more is the best thing you can do to have a good working relationship with your employer. Do not let yourself become too angry and do not be offended easily. Keep calm and do your best in your work. This is a professional trait that sometimes is undervalued but can have a real payoff in your career. 8) Be a problem-solver not a problem-maker: When problem occurs, do not just rely to your boss. You are in a team so you must help him in fixing things that gone wrong. Try to avoid complaining and just find ways on how you can contribute to the solution of the problem. 9) Make the most of what you have: You have a job, you get paid properly, and you have a good relationship with your co-workers here are just some of the things that you should be grateful of. Even though your boss is such a pain, you dont have to stress yourself out just thinking about him. You can still make the most of what you have in the company youre working for by focusing on the good things thats happening to you. 10) Avoid the art of backstabbing: Backstabbing and gossiping is an unprofessional act. This should not be practiced in the workplace because this only destroys the relationship of people in the team or department. Nobody is perfect and so is your boss. Avoid spreading bad things about him. Whatever happens between you at work or no matter how bad his attitude towards you is, you should not gossip about him to other people. 11) Last resort: Move on and find another your job! If work just becomes too unbearable because of your horrible boss, you may need to consider quitting to save yourself and your health. Too much stress level is not good to you and it also affects your self-esteem so if you still have a little respect to yourself, move out and look for another job that will give you some peace of mind. Networking Interview #17 How To Get A Job Offer in This Economy Today in my networking challenge I am interviewing Andrea Kay. Andrea is a Career Coach and Author of five best-selling career books including Works a Bitch and Then You Make it Work. I am so excited to speak with her today, thanks so much for being here Andrea! Job Search Secrets: How to Get a Job Offer in This Economy 1)     How do you get an offer in a new career when you have no experience? Don’t try to sell yourself, but influence people. That is the biggest key. And the best way to influence somebody is to think through it. If I’m trying to make a change into a new career, what are the skills that this potential position and the potential employer is looking for? What skills and abilities do I need to have? What transferable skills do I bring with me? Show how serious you are. Passion, commitment to wanting to do this thing will make up and for any lack of experience that you have. Talking about the reasons why you wanted to make this change is so important. That is about 80% of influencing somebody else. Helping them see what is in you. The whole idea of why it matters to you and that is really going to be helpful in persuading somebody higher you. Your passion, your enthusiasm, and what you have done to prepare yourself. Tell a story for employer sees that you are worth the investment that will take you to bring you along in this new career. Everybody is so focused on selling but selling puts a lot of pressure to make sure you tell the employer what they want to hear. But, if instead, you’re focusing on influencing, your thinking will be totally differently. It’s really about telling a story and helping the other person see why this is so meaningful to you and what you’ve done to make yourself ready for it. 2) What is the  secret to getting a job offer in this economy? The secret is the same it’s always been no matter what the economy and that is to speak the employer’s language. That means help the employers see how you were going to make him/her and their company successful. This isn’t about you, this is about helping them see what you’re going to do for them. Most people don’t do that, they just sit there and they say “I have years of experience and I want a job” which is not speaking the employer’s language. Speaking the employer’s language is telling them the technical skills that you had and the abilities and talents that will help them be successful.  But much more important are skills and abilities and characteristics such as maturity, being excited about this job and the industry, being passionate about this particular area, working well with others, communicating, having the passion that you’re just worth the investment plus having the right technical skills.  The key to getting a job in any economy is really about speaking their language. 3) What is your suggestion to someone who is unhappy in their job and ready for a career change? First of all, you need to ask yourself some questions because a lot of people get career change mixed up with job change. The questions you want to ask are: What’s not working? What is it about my present situation makes me think it’s time for a career change? Is it the company? Is it the culture? Is it this job that I do with the company even though I love the company? Is it the person I work for? Identify what is not working. Then if you decide for whatever reason based on this data that you’ve gathered, really objectively look at it or sit down with somebody else . Figure out if it is time for a career change not just a job change. The question is what’s in here? What’s in me? So I can really get a sense of what will make me happy. 4) I know a lot of people trying to job change really quickly or changes career really quickly. And hop online and try to apply for a job. How long do you recommend taking to find a job? As long as it takes! And it’s not a matter of jumping online and applying for a job. Ask these questions What’s your worst day like? Why did you make this change? Then sit down and evaluate their list of needs and things that make them happy against what it really is like to be able to know what is a good mix. Even shadowing somebody, going into their job and seeing what a typical day is like. Trying out an internship. Asking them what career is typically like before you jump into it. 5) How can young professionals starting out in their career paths stand out and become successful in their careers? When you get in into a new career, do a review and see how other people are successful it and really learn to master the basics and really understand the technical aspects of your job. Get to know what it is that you do well. Focus on work that is essential to the success of your company. Dig around and find out what’s working, what’s not working and become a problem solver so the company sees that you really are somebody who wants to make a difference and looks for work that makes a difference. Not all jobs are equal, so look for the work that’s essential to the success of the company. Another key thing is being generous. Being generous with your time and your assistance will build that reputation that you are somebody who is there to help other people. Do those three things and you’ll get noticed and you will begin a successful career. 6) What is the best way to negotiate a raise? You need to make the case. Remember that this is a business conversation and based on objective information. Figure out what your market value is and what the case is for giving you this raise. Evidence that you’ve achieved more. Evidence that you’ve done more. Evidence that you’re performing better, you’ve taken on more responsibilities and as a result, youve achieved some great results for the company. You need to attach value to those achievements. You also need to pick the right time. You may be deserving, you may have a great case, but the timing isn’t right. And in that case you can always say okay this may not be the right timing, when can we revisit this. The key is to see this as a business conversation where your boss doesn’t know why you deserve this raise and what you’ve been doing. The planning, the homework, and the practicing and thinking through what you’re going to say that is what you need to do prior to that meeting. Do not go into the meeting not knowing all those facts that I just listed.  7)  What is one thing that you wish you would have known as a young professional woman just starting out in her career? Most of the things I think that I wish I would have known meant I wouldn’t have gone through the trials and tribulation that I did, which helped me get to where I am. One thing that I wish somebody told me and helped me with is understanding the importance of saving money in the jobs that I had. Nobody ever sat down and did that for me. If I look back as a young person, I really wish I had done that and understood what it all meant and how to take care myself in my career. Another thing is I wish I understood at a younger age the importance of understanding other people’s point of view. That’s the other thing that has helped me later on in my career and in the work that I do is really getting into somebody elses shoes and then understanding that it can help you be more influential. You don't want to include words that will be used over again in your job search.If you are looking for a job, you are going to use resume writing for a long time. There are going to be job searches that come along, so you want to make sure that you have all of the information that you need on your resume. Once you include keywords, you are going to keep getting rejected for jobs by employers who only want to interview someone who has the skill set they are looking for.Also, if you are currently unemployed, you will want to avoid filling your resume with a lot of information that will take up a lot of space. Try to stick to a few pieces of information per page. You can always expand later if you have more time.Keep your resume focused on one particular skill. Make sure that it does not have a bunch of information that won't be used. Your employer wants to read a resume that is focused on their needs.It is also important to know what to avoid in a cover letter. These are usually used before an interview, but they can also be included at the very end to save some space. It is important to remember that they will not be needed as the resume will have already been filled in.One of the best things to avoid in a cover letter is repeating your job history. It is not professional and will show that you don't care about your work history. Make sure that you don't go into details about any training or certifications that you have done.Finally, you should avoid using abbreviations. An abbreviation will show that you did not prepare for your job search and you will also show that you don't read the guidelines for resume writing. Make sure that you look over the guidelines for writing a resume before you apply for a job.These are just a few of the things that you should avoid in re sume writing. HUFFPOST How to Write a Cover Letter - Jane Jackson Career I was recently interviewed by HuffPost for this article on how to write a cover letter, resumes and how to create a powerful LinkedIn profile.Published in HuffPost on 20 July 2017, written by  David Barden,  Journalist, HuffPost AustraliaHeres an excerpt:How To Write A Cover LetterA well-written cover letter could be the difference between an interview or a rejection.Job applications can be stressful and its often difficult to decide what you should or shouldnt include in your application.But if you want to prove to a new employer that youre the ideal candidate for a job, its a good idea to include a cover letter (and an absolute must if the job ad requires one).According to career management coach  Jane Jackson, while they might be a pain to write, cover letters are important because they give you the opportunity to show a bit of personality while highlighting information contained in your CV that you believe makes you an ideal employee.Jackson told HuffPost Australia that its impor tant to take the time to carefully craft your cover letter so it shows a hiring manager who you are and why youre the candidate theyve been looking for.What should you have in your cover letter?How you format your cover letter is just as important as the information it contains. A good cover letter should use size 10 or 11 point font and fit neatly on a single page. When applying for a position, dont be shy use the  stalking  research skills youve developed over the years to find out who will be reviewing your application.Make sure you find out the name of the person to who it is addressed, Jackson said.Dont put To Whom It May Concern do a bit of research and get a name, because it makes such a difference and it shows that you care.If you mention their name its just that little bit of [a] personal touch that makes it better.Before diving into it, Jackson also recommends clearly stating the position youre applying for, where and when it was advertised and the reference number (if ap plicable).A good cover letter will usually contain four paragraphs, the first of which should grab the attention of the reader and provide an explanation as to why youre writing to the employer. In the second paragraph, Jackson recommends linking your relevant experience to the advertisement.Following on from this, its important that in your third paragraph you relate yourself to the company or group youre hoping to work with. Dont hold back tell the reader what you can offer and the difference you believe you can make to the organisation. A good tip for nailing this section of your cover letter is to research the position youre applying for as well as the company.To read the full article click here
